Review: Conjured by Sarah Beth Durst

Summary-
Eve has a new home, a new face, and a new name—but no memories of her past. She’s been told that she's in a witness protection program. That she escaped a dangerous magic-wielding serial killer who still hunts her. The only thing she knows for sure is that there is something horrifying in her memories the people hiding her want to access—and there is nothing they won’t say—or do—to her to get her to remember.
At night she dreams of a tattered carnival tent and buttons being sewn into her skin. But during the day, she shelves books at the local library, trying to not let anyone know that she can do things—things like change the color of her eyes or walk through walls. When she does use her strange powers, she blacks out and is drawn into terrifying visions, returning to find that days or weeks have passed—and she’s lost all short-term memories. Eve must find out who and what she really is before the killer finds her—but the truth may be more dangerous than anyone could have ever imagined.

Review-
My favorite holiday is Halloween and my favorite books usually involve some sort of paranormal aspects. Being scared is fun for many people, hence the enormous popularity of Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. Conjured was definitely a macabre book that sent chills down my spine. The funny thing is that the book started so normal---a young woman, Eve, with amnesia has been placed in the Witness Protection Program to protect her from an insane serial killer. She gets a job at a library and meets a boy, Zach. Totally normal, right? Wrong! The head librarian has a second set of eyes in her collarbone. When Eve and Zach kiss, they float up to the ceiling and books fly around them. Eve is almost killed by firebolts thrown from the fingers of another witness in the program. And her dreams/memories.....They are fantastic and so deliciously creepy that you might just want to keep the light on at bedtime.
I just can't say enough good things about this book. Teen romance, adventure, mystery, horror---and my favorite part of the book---the struggle that the characters all have with their morals and consciences regarding Eve and the serial killer. Author Sarah Beth Durst shows that life isn't really black and white. There are many shades of gray that make up the decisions that humans come to every day. Is it ok to kill to protect the woman that you love? Is it ok to become an alcoholic and beat your wife because of the deep wellspring of pain inside you from the death of your young child? Is it ok to kill for your parents? Conjured is a terrific, well-thought-out book that gives the reader a lot to think about while entertaining and scaring the pants off us!
